During my junior year summer internship at Reisenauer Dermatology, I had the privilege of working alongside Dr. Reisenauer, Dr. Soon, and Dr. Song, gaining invaluable insights into the field of dermatology. Throughout this experience, I encountered a multitude of procedures and conditions that broadened my understanding of dermatological care.
One of the fundamental techniques I learned during my internship was the use of liquid nitrogen to freeze off small precancers. Witnessing this procedure firsthand emphasized the importance of early detection and treatment in preventing more serious skin conditions.
Another significant aspect of my internship was learning about C&D treatments (curettage and desiccation). Understanding how these methods are employed to treat various dermatological issues highlighted the versatility and efficacy of dermatologic interventions.
Moreover, delving into the intricacies of melanoma cancer and its spread provided me with a deeper appreciation for the complexities of diagnosing and managing skin malignancies. Witnessing the removal of dystrophic toenails, potential squamous cell carcinomas, and cysts underscored the diversity of conditions dermatologists address on a daily basis.
One particularly memorable experience was witnessing a reconstructive procedure where cartilage from the ear was utilized to repair layers of skin taken from the nose for a basal cell carcinoma patient. This procedure exemplified the innovative approaches dermatologists employ to restore both function and aesthetics for their patients.
Additionally, encountering unexpected occurrences, such as an artery popping in the forehead or a pulsing artery near the ear, underscored the importance of remaining composed and adaptable in high-pressure situations.
Reflecting on my internship, if given the chance to do it differently, I would opt for more days with shorter hours. While the experience was undoubtedly enriching, balancing long hours with rigorous learning proved challenging at times.
Overall, my internship at Reisenauer Dermatology was an invaluable learning experience that solidified my passion for dermatology. The exposure to diverse procedures, conditions, and patient interactions has equipped me with a deeper understanding of the field and has made dermatology a strong candidate for my future career in the medical field.
